Skills Needed: Straight sewing on a sewing machine, fearless inhibition, and your basic scissor wielding skills
Supplies Needed:
- A loose fitting pullover shirt to use as a pattern
- Slightly stretchy jersey or any non-fray fabric- 1 yard minimum
- A couple extra corresponding pieces of fabric- 6''x6'' minimum
- A sewing machine
- Matching thread
- Scissors
- Straight pins
- A glue stick
1. First up, choose the shirt you want to use for your pattern. I chose this cropped lacy top that I love to wear over a tank top with some high-waisted pants. I know, high-waisted isn't for everyone, but I love it! You can pick any shirt that is a.) loose-fitting and b.) pulls over your head.
2. Next fold your fabric in half and then in half again so there are four layers of fabric here. Fold your pattern shirt in half and place it on top of the fabric. Lay it as flat as you can! 3. Cut around the edges of the pattern shirt leaving about an inch hanging over. Cut the edges as cleanly as you can because we aren't hemming! When you unfold it you should have two pieces that are whole, like mine! |
4. Next, if you want to, use your extra coordinating fabric to make your shirt unique! Add a heart or two or some triangles, arrows, you know, whatever catches your fancy. I used a very light dab of glue stick to hold my hearts in place until I stitched them down.
5. Lastly, stitch the shirt together right sides facing, then turn it inside out. Because it is no-fray fabric and I'm going for a more casual look, I didn't hem the shirt or finish the edges. Tada!
