Recently, I was looking through some books at Barnes and Noble and found a great book with pages full of beautiful book art. I was really inspired by "Book Art" by Clare Youngs, and especially loved the idea of this pop-up flower book.
So, I attempted my own version of this work of art. This being my first time doing anything related to book art, it didn't turn out quite as awesome as the aforementioned flower book. But, hopefully this tutorial will give you an idea of how to create your own design out of old books collecting dust.
Step 1:
Rip some pages out of the book that you'll use to cut up. Then, choose the design you want (I chose butterflies) and cut a stencil out of cardstock that you'll use to trace.

Step 2:
Trace a bunch of butterflies (or whatever design you chose) on the paper you ripped out.* Cut them out, and then poke a hole through the middle of each, using a pencil tip. Add some color, if so desired.
*I interspersed some cardstock with the book paper to add variety.

Step 3: Cut strips of cardstock (about 1/8'' long), stick it through the hole, and fold over to hold in place.* Bend so that it stands in place and attach another butterfly to the other side using the same technique.
*I cut a slit in the paper to allow a little more security.

Step 4: glue the butterflies to the book, in sporadic order until it covers most of the page. Try to allow for a lot of different heights.
I found this on the front cover of the book, which I thought was appropriate. So, I glued it to the corner.
