Oh, Elizabeth and Julia, those crooks. Their challenge for my week was to make a body scrub using ONLY ingredients found in my kitchen! (My immediate thought was an inventory: couscous, red wine, wheat germ, and peanut butter. Basically nothing I want to ever rub all over my body!)
My quirky pantry luckily yielded coconut oil, which I use for hair treatments and stir frys. I figured it would be my best best for a base, and knew it was moisturize-y. Or at least I hoped!
I scrounged around the kitchen for the scrubby part of the scrub (very essential), considering oatmeal for a hot second but thinking it would get too mushy. Ew. So, sugar it was! Two ingredients and one very clueless girl. WHAT COULD GO WRONG?
Coconut oil is not actually as oily substance-wise as its name suggests. I put about 2 tablespoons in a mason jar I found in my cabinet and popped it in the microwave to soften it up a little (but not too hot, or it would melt the sugar).
15 seconds was the perfect time. Self five.
OK. Coconut oil mushy, I added about a tablespoon of sugar. And prayed to the gods it wouldn't suck.
It came out a little goopy. The outlook was grim. I smeared a bit on my hand and put it to the test. GUYS. It worked great! I scrubbed my hands for about 30 seconds, then rinsed the mixture off and washed my hands. My hands have been silky soft for the rest of the day. Who knew, right?
I'm going to leave my miracle goop on the kitchen sill so I can fancy up my hands after I do dishes. I'm really happy slash genuinely surprised with how easy this was. And I might cheat and make some more but add some essential oils to make it smell lovely.
